Phyllis Slocum joined the University of North Texas in the fall of 2002 after a long career in the broadcast industry. At UNT she teaches a number of upper level courses including Television News Producing; International Communications; Interviewing and Performance, Media in the 21st Century, and British Media based at the University of London. She is the Internship Coordinator for the Department of Media Arts; Faculty Adviser for Converged Broadcast Media, and station manager for NTTV (North Texas Television) the 24/7 Student Media Television cable operation. The student-operated station airs news, sports, and entertainment programming developed and produced by students.
Professionally, she worked in both radio and television, but the focus for the majority of her career has been television news, television management, and the broadcasting industry. During her years with 7 different television stations, Phyllis served as an anchor, reporter, producer, executive producer, and news director. In those capacities she was recognized by her colleagues for outstanding work.
Moving into broadcast consulting Phyllis worked for nearly 16 years with one of the nation’s most highly acclaimed broadcast consulting firms, Audience Research & Development, focusing on news, marketing, management, and audience and talent development. In addition to her work in industry and academia, she is also a professional voice-over talent working with companies to develop their on-air sound.
Phyllis holds a B.A. in Political Science from Kalamazoo College and an M.A. in Radio Television and Film/Industry Studies from The University of North Texas. She is active in various professional organizations serving on panels, making presentations, and has published and co-authored several papers.
