Daytime Emmy® FAQ
You are automatically eligible if: you are a current member of the Television Academy (aka Primetime) OR EQUIVALENT, a current member of any NATAS Chapter with 5+ years of national experience, or an Emmy nominee or winner (from any Emmys - Daytime, Primetime, Sports, News & Documentary, Children's & Family). Other industry individuals may be accepted if they have equivalent memberships (such as WGA, DGA, etc.)
Daytime Emmy utilizes peer judging, meaning each category is judged specifically by experts within that field. For example, cinematographers judge Cinematography. Once approved, Judges are assigned to 2-3 categories based on their expertise and are given 2-3 weeks to view all the material within their assigned categories and give it a score based on a 7 to 1 rubric. Judges are NOT asked to pick five, select their favorite, or even to compare entries against one another. Judges are asked to score each entry individually on their merits. The nominees AND the winners are determined in the SAME ROUND OF SCORING using averages.
The Daytime Emmys does not operate with an FYC system. As each entry is already required to be viewed by the judges and the winners have already been determined at the time nominees are announced, FYC is not useful.
Each category is 8-10 hours of viewing - IF YOU WATCH 100%. The minimum requirement for each category will NOT be set to 100%, but there is a minimum viewing that is required before you are able to score. This ensures each entry is actually at least partially reviewed. You can login and log out of the portal as many times as you want during the judging window.
In order to keep the judging process as fair as possible, administration is first tasked with vetting judge registrants to evaluate if they are eligible to judge (based on factors such as memberships, longevity in the industry, etc.) and then, if approved, placing each judge on panels based on their specific expertise.
JUDGES ARE NOT PERMITTED TO JUDGE ON CATEGORIES IN WHICH THEIR OWN WORK IS FEATURED.
Administration does their best to place judges on non-conflicted categories, but in events where there is no other comparable category available, the individual’s work will be removed from that judge’s ballot either by administration or by self-conflicting the entry in the judging portal.
Dates are always slightly subject to change by judging is currently scheduled for Thursday, March 21 through Thursday, April 11.
